girl in a coma @ local 506

I know there are a ton of bands I say this about, but Girl in a Coma really are one of my favorites to shoot — such dynamic women, such clear love for what they’re doing on stage, and such great music. I can’t go wrong shooting them, and I can’t go wrong still being…

these united states @ local 506

Gorgeous set from These United States; Jesse Elliott has an amazing voice and the songwriting on the new record is stellar, even more heartwrenching live. And a wild amp-standing-solo-filled set from the Henry Clay People, who were a joy to shoot under the new light in the 506. More here, in the full set.

death to false hope fest ii

This is the first of what will be several posts about Death To False Hope Fest II this week; some just photos, and hopefully if I manage to get it all transcribed, one full of short interviews with bands, videographers, wives, and punk fans. But this one, this one is just about my Saturday, and…

the district attorneys @ local 506

The District Attorneys have put out one of my favorite records of 2012 thus far, the doowop shimmering indie rock gem Slowburner, and they didn’t disappoint last night. They’ve got an amazing chemistry on stage, the harmonies of their singers are tight and clear, and the guitar work is incredible. I adored their set. I…

show preview: modern skirts & the district attorneys

Convincing you to come to the 506 tonight, my reviews of the latest releases from Athens’ Modern Skirts and the District Attorneys. The District Attorneys — Slowburner (2012): pealing and guttering modern guitars with Garth Hudson organ and ’50s doowop backing vocals and handclaps, this is a phenomenal follow-up from Atlanta’s District Attorneys to their…

the mynabirds @ local 506

hat an amazing show. Laura Burhenn has the most phenomenal stage presence, and that voice. The 506 felt electric all night, from Raleigh’s The Design’s wild opening set to Sean Bones’ funky guitar pop to the Mynabirds’ stellar, roof-raising, wall-shaking set. Blew my mind. Full set here.

the bouncing souls @ cat’s cradle

I love shooting punk shows, and last night I kind of even missed the Brewery a little. The light there was great for punk shooting. The Souls were fun, the Menzingers made me cry, and Luther is a recommendation for Pam, if she doesn’t know them already. The Menzingers’ 2012 record On The Impossible Past…

langhorne slim @ the casbah

Langhorne Slim is, along with Josh Ritter, one of the most captivating live performers I’ve ever had the pleasure of watching, simply because being on stage, singing his songs, delighting an audience, seems to bring him such delight. He smiles, he spins in circles, he climbs the drum kick, he gets right up in the…
