100 foods in 100 counties: watauga county

Watauga County – Boone: Coyote Kitchen: Taos Boat The menu at Coyote Kitchen says: Sazon Chicken, Cornbread, Black Beans, Fried Sweet Potatoes, Roasted Corn, Sweet Plantains, Tomatoes, Quesadilla Cheese & Chipotle Cream Cheese. Spicy and sweet and the chicken was fantastically kicky. Their salsas were amazing, too, especially the cranberry chipotle.

hot dogs everywhere: the dog house

Where: The Dog House, High Point, NC What: Chili cheese dog (me), dogs with relish and onions (Trav) With whom: Trav Why: We were in High Point for some photo taking, and this was recommended! Grade: Solid B. Chili was quite good and the dogs are nicely grilled, but a slice of American cheese doesn’t really do it for me….

a small tour of american chain restaurants

I posted about this on Instagram, but I wanted to put it somewhere more permanent than stories. Because of a recovery conversation where I learned that Trav has never eaten at Olive Garden, we have decided to go on a tour of major American chain restaurants. We’re four in so far, and I’m going to…

Scotland County – Laurel Hill: Mamie’s Drive Inn: Burger and Fries Stop at Mamie’s Drive Inn for the atmosphere and the chili! This is a fantastic little road side dive – in the best way – on US 15 near the SC border.

Where: Doss’ Old Fashioned Ice Cream, Kernersville, NC What: 2 chili cheese slaw dogs With whom: Trav Why: there was a botanical garden down the street Grade: B/B+. Buns toasted in grease, excellent chili, traditional red NC hot dogs. Good, not exceptional.

100 foods in 100 counties: buncombe county

Buncombe County – Asheville – 12 Bones Smokehouse: Baby Back Ribs Another entry for my 100 foods in 100 counties project! The fact is, I am not a Ribs Person. Generally I find them too much work for too little payout. That is not the fact at 12 Bones Smokehouse. They are well worth the…

hot dogs everywhere: buns ‘n’ brews (columbus, oh)

Where: Buns ‘N’ Brews, Columbus, OH What: the Texan: chili and cheddar cheese on a pretzel bun With whom: Trav Why: for Project Heartburn, recommended by John Grade: A. life list: learn to make cheese

52. Learn to make paneer and mozzarella. I have wanted to learn to make cheese for absolutely ever, because I love eating cheese, and last night I had the chance to take a class in it! My friend Nina and I went to a hands-on cheese making class at Southern Season, taught by Leslie Chartier…

eats in the thrill: 411 west

A Chapel Hill classic, I hadn’t been here in years and Trav had never been before we took his folks there this past weekend. Their whole menu is great – the antipasto tray was spectacular – but I do love their pizettes. This one was sourced from all NC farms.

eats in the thrill: buns

Ordered hamburgers from Buns the other night, and they were A+. Brie, bacon, honey mustard. Would eat again.
