When Lucinda Williams announced a show at Haw River Ballroom about a month ago — she’s on her way to Tennevirginia to headline Bristol Rhythm & Roots Reunion this upcoming weekend — it sold out so fast that Lucinda (and the Cat’s Cradle, who sponsored the show) added a second show, tonight’s set. So I can tell you, folks who got tickets to tonight’s show but not yesterday’s: sold out, sweaty and all, it will be totally, totally worth it. Last night Lucinda came out and kicked off the night with “I Just Wanted To See You So Bad” before reeling off a string of hits — and sometimes, you’d be disappointed just to hear the hits, but somehow with Lucinda Williams, the hits are so damn good that you don’t mind — to a packed house. She’s just as great live as I expected her to be, and Haw River, with its tall ceilings and deep balconies, was the perfect venue for her enormous voice.
She’s a legend, and she’s a legend for a reason; I felt lucky just to be there, and be allowed to photograph the single song I was allowed.
