the new familiars @ broad street cafe

The New Familiars do a lot of things exceedingly well, including the all-purpose “being awesome and beloved to me”, but one thing that they do above and beyond almost anyone I see play live regularly is a cover song — with no regard to genre or source, they have an impeccable ear as a band for picking a song they can make their own, and then destroying it (in a good way, I mean).

They did some amazing stuff last night, but the stand out was the acoustic, totally unplugged cover of Townes Van Zandt’s “Waitin’ Around To Die” that they closed with; one of the most gorgeous things I’ve heard all year.
