dylan vs petty covers benefit for haiti

dylan vs petty: big fat gap, originally uploaded by minervacat.

My plan for today was to post several Tom Petty and Bob Dylan covers, in honor of the Dylan vs. Petty Haiti benefit show that we attended last night, but it turns out that in my enormous collection of covers, I actually have very few Tom Petty covers. The extent of my Petty covers collection: three covers of “Rebels”, all done by the Drive-By Truckers; four covers of “American Girl” by three different bands; one cover of “Yer So Bad” by a band labeled Hillside Recording, whoever the hell that is.

On the other hand, I have 83 separate Dylan covers, although that does include three separate mp3 instances of Jason & the Scorchers’ cover of “Absolutely Sweet Marie”. Which is fine, Bob Dylan is phenomenal songwriter, and a well-done Dylan cover is kick-ass. But my point is: where are all the Petty covers? Is Tom Petty not cool enough for you guys? Because seriously. Tom Petty is awesome.

So I can’t bring myself to share any covers, because the Petty covers I have, while all good, don’t hold a candle to some of the Dylan covers in my collection (the afore-mentioned “Absolutely Sweet Marie”, which is one of my favorite covers of all time, artist being covered be damned; the Cowboy Junkies covering “If You Gotta Go, Go Now”; the Portastatic cover of “It’s All Over Now Baby Blue”), and that just seems unfair to Tom Petty. Somebody bring me a revelatory, kick-ass Petty cover, and I’ll do that covers post for you.

Dylan and Petty songs covered by various bands yesterday evening included but was not limited to: Handle Me With Care; A Hard Rain’s Gonna Fall; I Shall Be Released; Stop Draggin’ My Heart Around; Listen To Her Heart; Don’t Come Around Here No More; Yer So Bad; Won’t Back Down; You Ain’t Goin’ Nowhere. It was good times. Frankly, it was a show and I had not been to one of those in two weeks, owing to last week’s snowing out of three shows, and I love Bob Dylan and Tom Petty shamelessly on both counts, so it was going to be great no matter what, but then Birds & Arrows absolutely killed it with their three Petty covers, so that was extra A+.

A quick search on Coverville’s cover search for Tom Petty gets four pages of results, if that helps.

i saw that! but then i realized that i didn’t want to find the GOOD ones myself and got discouraged and figured complaining on the internet was more productive. 🙂
