Douglas of Fresh Cherries from Yakima has declared this on repeat week, which is something I can get behind. I will listen to songs I adore until they’ve been driven into the ground. I have a smart playlist in iTunes that’s devoted to my 100 most-played tracks.

Number one with a bullet in my iTunes is [Mike Doughty’s cover of Drink Me’s “Train To Chicago”]. I mean, head and shoulders above anything else — as of this writing, I have listened to that track 556 times.

The thing about listening to a track on repeat is that I can’t usually tell you why I love it; I sat in front of my laptop for ten minutes trying to figure out what the draw of that Doughty track is. I genuinely don’t know, but I know that I love it. I know that in grad school, I would spend hours reading about collection development and writing SQL queries, listening to that 2 minute track on repeat-one.

I guess the thing about songs like that is if they grab you that way, it probably doesn’t matter why — it just matters that they do.

So that’s my most-repeated track in iTunes. What’s yours?

I had that song stuck in my head on a loop on Sunday. Here’s what I’d say:

    1 – I find 6/8 time my favorite signature. It’s like flying.
2 – Somehow, with just his voice and spare guitar, it sounds like the shooka-shook of the train. I love the train.
3 – The images in the lyrics are specific enough to be real, but vague enough to be my own memories.
    4 – It’s a fucking awesome song.

…5 – I had exactly zero idea that was a cover. I am a fool.

I love that you have a favorite time signature. ♥

Also, I went around saying that “Looks” was my favorite Doughty song for more than a year before I found out it was a cover, so no shame.

Not my iPod, but the songs most frequently playing in my head by spontaneous generation. 1. Mozart’s clarinet quintet. 2. Fly me to the moon, Sinatra version 3. Sesame Street theme 4. If I only had a brain/heart/nerve. 5. Mozart’s Alleluia. I need some new material.

I think you’ve got some classics in there; your brain-generated repeat-one is pretty good! 🙂
