west point on the eno

Second test run with the 100mm today, farting around with Ash and shep. at West Point Park on the Eno River in Durham, and I’m still loving it. It’s incredibly crisp, the depth of field I can get is unbelievable, and it just grabs color so well. It isn’t, however, ever going to be a great walking-around lens — if I’m going to have to meter on the fly (outside with a full manual, I set my shutter to 1/200 and flip aperture up or down on the lens depending on the light), I’d rather have the shorter focal length of the 50mm. It’s just a shade more versatile for non-concert settings.

But I’m learning that stuff, learning that I have those preferences, and this time last year I couldn’t have told you what my favorite combination of shutter speed and aperture were at all, so. (1/25 and f2.8, for the record. It’s what I use to produce those weird, dreamy stop-motion concert images.)

A good weekend full of food and lovely weather and excellent company.
