J. was nice enough to drag me along to see the Low Anthem with him last night, and they didn’t disappoint. In fact I was late to work yesterday morning because there were two tracks left on their 2009 release Oh My God, Charlie Darwin when I pulled up to the office, and I refused to go inside until I’d listened to them — and they’re just as wonderful live.

The album appeals to me for the same reason that the new Ha Ha Tonka album and, actually, the new Magnolia Electric Co. album do; it’s eerie, intimately sad music, but they know how to bust out the drums and the kickin’ basslines when they want to rock it down. (“Champion Angel” and “The Horizon Is A Beltway” are probably my two favorite tracks on the album, both rockers.)

The company was good; the music was fantastic; and the lights at the 506 were miraculously not complete shit. For a show I didn’t pay for, it was pretty top-notch.
