Sampson County – Garland – Old School Sorghum Festival, McDaniel’s School: Pure Sorghum
Another 100 food crossed off! Sorghum is a grain that can be used whole or ground into flour, and it also can be made into a syrup that is similar to molasses and can be used as a sweetener in baking. That’s what I tasted – see above – and bought a pint of, and I plan to do some baking with it soon!
The Sorghum Festival in Sampson County also features old cars, lots of vendors selling crafts and homemade treats, and demonstrations of how sorghum is processed and used. Sampson County – the largest town is Clinton – is further east than I usually venture in the part of the state that’s not quite the Piedmont and not quite the coast, and I had a lovely time noodling about the backroads on my way there.
