“You grow up with a dream of discovering this place, not in terms of Columbus but in terms of your own imagination.” — Robbie Robertson of The Band
At the moment, in between trashy mystery paperbacks, I’m slowly reading — savoring — Barney Hoskyns’ Across The Great Divide: The Band and America, which is exactly what it sounds like, and while it suffers from fairly purple prose in places, the stories it contains and the words of the actual musicians are all highly worthwhile. I’m a little bit smitten with teenaged Robbie Robertson, but as always, as I’m reading, the photo I keep going back to is this one, Elliott Landy‘s stunning shot of a young Rick Danko. There’ve actually been a few references to Landy’s time with the Band in the book, and I’m hoping for more from him in later pages. I want to know what it’s like to make photos that gorgeous.

Ooh, keep me posted.
So far it’s really good! When I’m done, I’ll post about the best stories etc, because there’ve been some good ones, and they aren’t even the Band yet! They’re still Levon Helm and the Hawks! 😀
