lost in the trees @ cat’s cradle

I don’t often cover straight-up “music news”, because there are plenty of bloggers out there who do that primarily and much, much better than I ever could, but I figured that I owed it to Ari Picker, the crew at Trekky, and the Lost in the Trees cast of thousands to make a note of it: my beloved local Lost in the Trees signed with Anti- Records out of L.A. yesterday. I’m always torn between pride and a feeling of “but, but, you’re mine!” when local bands land out of town record deals, but in this case, it’s 99.7% pride. Ari is truly phenomenal songwriter, the sweepingly epic and clever orchestral indie folk pop that Lost in the Trees makes deserves a huge audience, and Anti- are a fantastic label who will take really good care of the band. (Hipsters are going to eat this shit up, and then I’m going to get in a fistfight with one of them at a show. Mark it!)

Like I said, I’m always a little heartbroken when my beloved locals take to the road full-time in pursuit of their dreams, because I’m selfish and I miss them when they’re gone, but it’s hard to stay heartbroken over news like this. Ari, LIIT, and Trekky have been a huge part of my starting to get a foothold as a photographer in both our scene and elsewhere, because they have all been nothing but patient and supportive while I stuck a camera in Ari’s face over and over again, and I am so incredibly psyched for Ari and his cast of merry music majors to get this chance.

And, hey, if you’re never heard of Lost in the Trees before, go check them out — they’re amazing.
