- I could seriously watch Doug Martsch noodle around on his guitar forever and not get bored. He’s such an odd, awkward frontman, and yet simultaneously fantastically compelling when he gets behind a mic — actually, seeing Martsch made me wonder if some of Matt Berninger’s stage tics are from a lifetime of Built to Spill fandom. Wouldn’t surprise me. Was this show worth waiting ten years to see them? Absolutely it was; it was masterful and mind-blowing.
- Dear Dude Who Was Standing Behind Me Yelling Directly Into My Ear For “Cortez The Killer” Every 90 Seconds: I promise, Doug heard you the first 37 times you hollered for it. In fact, after the third time, I’m pretty sure he heard you. You’re lucky that it was a Sunday night and I was feeling tired and lazy, because after the 52nd time (and, yes, I counted, just so you know), you were really aching for a good hard punch in the kidneys. Your opinions are bad, sir, and I bet you don’t feel bad but you certainly should. No love, A.
- How To Run A Tour: First opener on at 9. First opener off at 9:30. Second opener on at 9:45. Second opener off at 10:29. Headliner on at 10:45. Headliner wrapping up encore at 12:20. It’s been a long time since I’ve seen such a well-managed tour; the changeovers were works of art.
- The first opener — I caught the end of their set, about five minutues’ worth — was a fairly thrashy metal-ish band that I’d never heard of; their music wasn’t my cup of tea but I caught this shot, of which I’m really proud, and during the down time in the evening, I pondered whether or not I could stand the music for the pursuit of shooting the really interesting visuals in metal and hardcore. Ultimately, probably not: I’d end up bored and cranky and covered in beer, and I’m bored and cranky enough without also being covered in beer on my own as it is. But if there are any Triangle residents out there who wanted to recommend a place to start in that genre in the NC, I’d contemplate it, at least.
- Leaned over the stage right monitor at one point, looked down after snapping the shot, and saw this guy peering up at me. Trace remainders of last Tuesday’s Lucero show; it made me smile. And I added to my growing collection of shots for Michael Casey Was Here. (You can read about how awesome Michael is here!)
- Nothing to do with Built to Spill, but I dropped off 14 rolls of film at Rite-Aid today. Most of them were shep.’s, but there were two of mine in there. I probably won’t pick them up for a few weeks, but I’ll be interested to get them back. I’m down to a handful of rolls from last year’s backlog (I shot way more than I could afford to develop at the time), about half of them unlabeled rolls of 400 and 800 which will inevitably turn out to be photos of Jason Isbell’s shoes, a few of various Franklin Street shenanigans (Carolina at Duke night in ’08, Halloween ’08), one labeled “Red Collar/CC” that may or may not actually be Red Collar at the Cradle, a few of an American Aquarium show from the 506 two Mays ago. The last of which was the first time I saw Langhorne Slim, too, but no photos of that, or the New Familiars who played the middle set that night, either. So. Film. Woo. \o/
- … I thought there was something else but there wasn’t.
