samantha crain & the midnight shivers @ the local 506

Joe Kwan (of the Avett Brothers) and Dolph Ramseur (of, well, Ramseur Records) were at the show I went to at the 506 last night. It was vaguely weird in a way I couldn’t put my finger on; it’s not like I haven’t seen Kwan at the 506 before (he was at the Midtown Dickens/Paleface/Holy Ghost Tent Revival show at the beginning of June) and it’s not like I haven’t become completely inured to seeing rock stars out and about (I pretty much have), but it unsettled me. I kept squinting at Dolph like but why are YOU here? I don’t UNDERSTAND. The whole evening felt strange, save the company. Not bad by any means. Just … odd. Everything just felt a little off.

One of these days I am going to walk into the 506 and Scotty Avett is going to be standing at the bar and I’m going to stroke out right there. I’m inured to most rock stars, but Scotty Avett is not one of them.

Despite my inability to cope with unexpected people in familiar venues, Samantha Crain & the Midnight Shivers’ new album remains totally kick-ass, and you should go buy it or go catch them on tour.
